The decision to form Pakistan Medical Journalists
Association (PMJA) was taken in a meeting held on May 5th
1977 at PMA House Karachi. Mr. M. A Khan the then executive editor
of Medical Gazette was the host. The meeting was attended by
like-minded medical journalists working in various medical
newspapers. Those who took this initiative included Mr. Shaukat Ali
Jawaid (Chief Editor “Doctor” International which later became
“Pulse” International w.e.f. January 1st 2000), Mr. M.A.
Khan and Mr. Niaz A. Sheikh of Medicomment. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid
was elected as the convener and was given the responsibilities to
write a constitution and the Byelaws. PMJA was formally registered
on December 8, 1983. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid was elected the founder
President with Mr. Javed Zaheer as General Secretary. Mr. Shaukat
Ali Jawaid continued as President till December 1990 when a decision
was taken to enlarge the membership of the Association by extending
invitation to editors of various medical journals. As such at a
meeting held at Karachi Gymkhana on January 21st, 1991
the Managing Committee approved full membership to six editors and
other eminent medical personalities who showed interest to promote
the aims and objective of PMJA.
Late Dr. Sarwar J. Zuberi Editor of JPMA was elected as President of
the Association on January 1st 1995. Mr. Mubarak Ali was
named as General Secretary.
Despite its limited resources, the Association has been quite active
ever since its inception. It took the initiative to organize a
seminar on Medical Writing at King Edward Medical College Lahore in
1992 wherein late Dr. Ijaz Ahmed Assistant Professor of Surgery at
KEMC who died at a very young age, played a vital role. Proceedings
of this seminar were published in a booklet form in May 1993. Later
it was revised and the Second Edition of the book “Medical Writing”
jointly edited by Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid, Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary and
Late Dr. Sarwar J. Zuberi was published in August 1997. The
Association has also organised seminars and workshops on “Medical
Writing” in different institution all over the country. It also
organized seminars on “Medical Writing” in collaboration with
Pakistan Cardiac Society, Pakistan Society of Physicians, Pakistan
Society of ORL and Pakistan Association of Dermatologists during
their annual/biannual conferences.
Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary Chief Editor and Chairman Editorial Board of
Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences was elected President of PMJA
in November 2001 while Prof. Maj. Gen. Muhammad Aslam Editor of
Pakistan Armed Forces Medical Journal was elected as General
Secretary. Prof. Tahir Saeed Haroon former Prof. of Dermatology at
KEMC was elected as President of PMJA for a two year term. He is the
current President who assumed this office on January 1st 2005.
Major Gen. Muhammad Aslam Editor AFMJ was re-elected as General
Secretary.
